Technical Details

A web application firewall is deployed at the edge through Cloudflare, Sucuri or AWS WAF depending on the existing stack, running a managed core rule set covering injection, cross-site scripting, path traversal and remote file inclusion. Deployment starts in detection mode, not blocking: real traffic is observed first so legitimate requests that would have been blocked are found before they cost anyone a transaction. False positives are tuned per rule with narrow exceptions scoped to a path or parameter, never by disabling a whole rule group, because a rule switched off to unblock one form stays off for every other route. Rate limiting is applied per endpoint, with login, password reset and checkout given their own thresholds. Geographic and ASN controls are used where the legitimate audience genuinely excludes a region. Bot management distinguishes verified search crawlers from scrapers so indexing is never blocked. Origin is locked to accept traffic only from the edge, otherwise the firewall can be bypassed entirely by requesting the origin IP directly. Blocked-request logs are reviewed, since a spike is either an attack or a misconfiguration and the two look identical in a summary count.
